Why Product Marketing Is Important For A Small Business

by Jayne From Business Marketing

Product Marketing

Product Marketing is a process that every business needs to go through in order to make sure they have a clear understanding of their target market, a reasonable purchase price, and know how to distribute the product.  It should be done for every product that a business plans on selling and should not be overlooked as it is very important.

Through the Product Marketing process businesses will be able to clarify important information about the product like:

What Is The Full Product Line That Is Going To Be Available

Are there companion products for the main product? Are there going to be future versions of the main product? What options will be available for the product? Knowing the full extent of possible products is necessary to get a good overview of the product itself.

Who The Customers Are That Will Want The Product.

Older people are not going to be interested in dolls or other products for kids, and kids will not be interested in makeup, handbags, or other adult products.  But, which adults would be interested in a new eye cream, or a pair of handmade socks? Figuring out what problem the product solves and what type of people need to have that problem solved is critically important to knowing how to market the product.

The Most Cost Effective Way to Distribute the Product

If you are selling large items or mass produced items in bulk then using a fulfillment service might be the most cost effective way to process and ship orders. If you are shipping ‘one of a kind’ items you might need to rent space to store them and create a tracking mechanism to make sure you don’t sell more than one of the same item.  Figuring out the most cost effective distribution solution is important to the bottom line.

What The Best Price For The Product Is

In order to find out what a good price point is for the product it’s important to research the market and see what competitors are charging as well as to check with customers by doing focus group research to see what they would be willing to pay for a product. Hitting the right price point is very important to the success of a small business.

Product Marketing is just one service that a marketing company can offer. If you are starting a small business and you don’t have a lot of experience in marketing, hiring a company to help you is a very good idea.
